The Grill (Dorchester Hotel)

Arriving at the Dorchester is an event in itself as liveried doormen usher you through the doors into this iconic building. Once inside, a vast flower arrangement confirms that all is as grand and lavish as you might hope. The Grill has a decidedly traditional feel with a Highland theme: large murals of kilted lairds gaze down from burnished gold walls, oversized lampshades and colourful tartan chairs, delivering a striking statement. The formal setting is matched by copious professional and polite staff. Expectation is high and chef Aiden Byrne delivers a menu of flair and imagination right from the off, with amuse-bouche of onion and parmesan soup and foie gras parfait served on a stick. A modern pairing of roast crayfish and ballotine of rabbit is the centre point of an impressive starter, with the leg meat presented in a cannelloni. Main-course pan-fried John Dory is perfectly cooked and comes with braised snails inside little lettuce parcels; lettuce is also introduced as an emulsion and finished with some smoked bacon - a complex and intricate dish. Roasted figs with smoked honey ice cream and almond cake is an equally creative dessert. There is a 7-course tasting menu with the option of a wine selection for five of the courses.
