Cedar Court Grand Hotel & Spa

Station Rise, YORK, YO1 6GD

2 rosettes

Overlooking the historic walls of one of northern England's best-loved cities, the imposing red-brick Edwardian edifice was given a major makeover, or 'reimagining' as design parlance now has it, in 2010. Huge windows let in plenty of light, and the principal restaurant, the Grill Room, is an expansive room done in today's favoured neutral colours, offset with lemon-yellow light-fittings, under which smartly dressed tables are set well apart. A formal service approach is quite in keeping with the overall tone, and the cooking plies a confident brasserie line, such as seared pigeon breast, wild mushroom risotto, or king scallops with black pudding (home-made) and creamed leeks, to start, followed ideally by something from the grill, be it a chicken breast, pork cutlet, or one of the first-rate and carefully timed steaks. Sauces are at an extra charge. Desserts can be of the deconstructed variety, as in a tiramisł which consists of a boozy sponge with whipped mascarpone, cubes of jelly and coffee sauce.
