This listed Georgian dower house has everything you might desire in a restaurant with rooms: just over 3 acres of beautiful grounds to unwind in, elegant and eminently civilised decoration and furnishings, and first-class food. Timothy and Emma Ford run the place with enthusiasm and dedication, and their restoration of the property has shown sensitivity to the period charm of the building while giving it a stylish and contemporary edge. Sumptuous fabrics, Farrow and Ball colours, huge windows overlooking the garden and terrace, and sympathetic modern touches provide an unobtrusive backdrop for fine eating and drinking. Tim's food shows a welcome absence of fuss and gimmickry, but this does not mean it lacks punch or panache: dishes are well crafted, considered and demonstrate a steady hand in the kitchen. Top-quality seasonal produce is used throughout and presentation is a strong suit. Start with warm terrine of lamb's sweetbreads, chicken and tarragon with Madeira sauce, or grilled fillet of Cornish mackerel with fennel escabèche and lemon chilli syrup. Rump of local lamb is served with Savoy cabbage, parsnip purée and rosemary sauce in a typically well-considered main course, while rum baba served with poached pineapple and cream and black pepper ice cream is a fine, inventive finish. There is an excellent wine list available.
