The Wykeham Arms

75 Kingsgate Street, WINCHESTER, SO23 9PE

2 rosettes

A coaching inn since the mid-1700s, The Wykeham Arms is in the historic heart of the city. There are simple options listed as 'Home Comforts' on the menu - beer-battered South Coast haddock - but this is a kitchen that can turn out a starter as fashionable as boneless chicken wings with BBQ emulsion and blue cheese sauce. A bang-on piece of sea bream stars in a main course with a seared scallop, salt-baked celeriac and wild mushrooms, while another partners roasted venison loin with red cabbage ketchup and cocoa gnocchi (classic flavours delivered in a creative manner). Finish with peanut butter parfait with strawberry jelly and toast ice cream.
