Marine Lake, Birnbeck Road, WESTON-SUPER-MARE, BS23 2BX
Bucket-and-spade Weston-super-Mare is trading up these days, and this smartly revamped bistro-style restaurant on the seafront near Birnbeck Pier fits in admirably with the town's new image. The outdoor terrace perched above the water is the place to be on a balmy day, while full-length picture windows make for a light-flooded space where everyone still gets a view of the bay, and chunky pale wood tables combine with oak floors in a pared-back contemporary look that wouldn't look out of place in a big city. Spanking-fresh fish and seafood landed by dayboats in Newlyn and Brixham is the mainstay of an unpretentious, Mediterranean-accented menu that starts with the likes of steamed Cornish mussels with smoked bacon, kale and cider sauce, followed by poached sea bream fillet with Bombay potatoes, spinach and spiced cream. There's plenty to keep carnivores happy too - perhaps confit duck leg with Toulouse sausage and mash.
