Best Western Swan Hotel
Sadler Street,
WELLS,
BA5 2RX
The spruced-up 500-year-old former coaching inn enjoys wonderful views of Wells Cathedral. The top-to-toe makeover has brought in smart contemporary style, blending immaculately with all the period character you would expect from five centuries of history. The classic dining room offers a memorable setting with its antiques and beautifully-sculpted linen-fold oak panelling; when alfresco dining is on the cards, you can sit outside in a secluded walled garden. Well thought out, daily-changing menus are full of good ideas, founded on top-notch materials from Somerset suppliers - perhaps warm partridge, perry pear purée, caramelised chicory and pickled walnuts to start, followed by confit lamb belly with couscous and garlic gremolata, or braised brisket of beef with honey roasted swede and black pepper jus, with rhubarb and custard crumble tart for pudding.

Fabulous food, amazing service from a very charming young man. We ended up there by chance as the place we were originally going to was closed. Sunday afternoon, 3 courses of the most delicious food I've had in a long time. Nice cold bottle of Chablis. Very reasonably priced at £17.95 for 3 courses for that standard of food.
