Stretton Road, Stretton, WARRINGTON, WA4 4NS
The opulent country hotel at Stretton began life more humbly in late Georgian times as the vicarage for nearby St Matthew's, but has grown in grandeur with the years. Its expansive restaurant, Topiary in the Park, takes its name from the sculpted greenery on view, and offers a gentle style of modern British cooking. Well-executed confit chicken and leek terrine comes with Jersey Royal espuma, while a lamb pairing - tender rump and crisply crumbed sweetbreads - is well served by punchy smoked aubergine purée, asparagus tips and gem lettuce. Finish with a refreshing dessert of coconut pannacotta, alongside baked pineapple and ginger beer granita.
