Facing the golden sands of Walberswick beach, The Anchor is a painstakingly restored and spruced-up traditional inn. Outdoor dining on benches under parasols makes the most of the location, and the beamed interiors are an equally welcoming sight at the chilly end of the year. An allotment and neighbours' gardens supply much of the kitchen provender, meaning that seasonality is a given, and the repertoire of modern dishes is a tempting one. Expect West Mersea oysters with red onion and Banyuls vinegar, roast cod with gnocchi, leeks and capers, and chargrilled rib-eye with chips and field mushrooms. All dishes come with wine recommendations from a carefully chosen list.
