The white-fronted house stands in extensive grounds on the south Cornwall coast overlooking secluded Carne beach. The panoramic maritime views are a feature in a dining room that has windows on three sides. Fixed-price menus change every evening for a hearteningly traditional style of cooking that might start with a puff pastry case of mussels, leeks and Cornish Brie, before passing on, via a serving of gurnard fillet in brown shrimp, tomato and tarragon dressing, to guinea fowl breast with ceps, lentils and garlicky spinach. Portloe lobsters at a supplement are a feature, with the full range of classic preparations on offer. Finish with Dutch-style apple pie and custard, or a selection of West Country cheeses. See entry for The Quarterdeck, which is also in the hotel.
