Standing in 30 acres of woodlands and immaculate gardens parallel to the famous Royal Troon golf course, Lochgreen House on the Ayrshire coast is a lovely mansion house restored to its former glory over 20 years ago. Popular for weddings and events, whatever you're in town for you won't lack for something to do around these parts, and the elegant Tapestry restaurant awaits for a leisurely lunch or a restorative dinner. Lit by three crystal chandeliers, the restaurant overlooks the fountain and gardens at the front of the house. The kitchen team is justly proud of Ayrshire produce and what isn't on the doorstep is no less judiciously sourced, and the creative modern cooking has a decidedly Scottish flavour. Dig into the light crumbed bread freshly baked in-house before excellent Troon Bay scallops with green olive and peperonata risotto and smoked anchovy butter. Next up, trio of lamb brings forth roast cutlet, caramelised sweetbreads and home-made lamb, leek and mustard sausage (beautifully presented with good depth of flavour), or go for pan-seared fillet of Loch Duart salmon with mushroom and tarragon cannelloni. Banana gets a full-on five ways treatment - pudding, pie, consommé, pannacotta and ice cream - and if you've still got room, the petits fours are pretty fine too.
