Description
A certain Basil Fawlty has landed Torquay with a culinary reputation that is quite at odds with the Elephant's classy act. Behind its canary yellow Georgian façade the Elephant offers two levels of dining: a ground-floor brasserie is quite literally, the entry level, or ascend to the upstairs fine-dining restaurant - The Room. The brasserie offers a relaxed setting for sound, straightforward cooking at keen prices; braised beef with truffle and marrowbone bread pudding or good old fish and chips. Upstairs you get bay views and food of serious merit. At the helm is an accomplished chef who has served time under some of Europe's legendary names, and now delivers a punchy menu showcasing elegant technique and ambitious combinations. The sheer quality of West Country ingredients shines through in dishes such as a pan-roasted fillet of halibut on parsnip purée with spring onion and verjus butter sauce, or Devon beef filled with truffle and bone marrow with Jerusalem artichoke and cep mousse and shallot tart.

dined in the upstairs fine dining restaurant 'The Room' which has the 3 rosettes, different to the casual steak grill downstairs. We found the food to be some of the most intesting and original dishes for a long long time, ingredients were fresh and of the best quality. Afantastic 9 course tasting menu was breathtakingly good and i would recommend to anyone staying in torquay. Only Gripe was the room was quite warm but it was a hot day and the sun was beating in

The evening started brilliantly with Artichoke / Garlic soup and a great white wine. After this, things appeared to slip. I returned my steak twice as it was raw! There was however, no hesitation with changing the dish, although sadly the staff seemed uninterested and did not want to engage in conversation on this particular evening.
