The Whitebrook

WHITEBROOK, Monmouth, NP25 4TX

4 rosettes

The Whitebrook is the winner of the AA Wine Award for Wales 2016-2017. A former drovers' inn surrounded by soaring trees in the lush Wye Valley, The Whitebrook is a restaurant with rooms with a genuine sense of place. Authenticity runs through it from the sincerity of the welcome, the respectful revamp of the interior, to the seasonally- and locally-minded cooking of chef-patron Chris Harrod. Time spent at Le Manoir with Raymond Blanc has helped to inform Chris's cooking with genuine craft and precision, and the local environment provides the final ingredient to create one of the region's top dining experiences. The restaurant itself is simple and stylish, with clever retention of original features, neutral and natural colours, and plenty of room between the smartly-laid, linen-clad tables. Passion for foraging and uncommon plants is evident on fixed-price menus that show well-measured creativity. Cornish crab gets a hit of heat from charlock (a wild mustard plant), and horseradish foam, or try smoked feather blade of Longhorn beef with Herefordshire snails, beer barley and nettle purée. Main-course suckling pig - rack and belly - comes with a fine piece of crackling, caramelised celeriac, and pear to cut through the richness and lamb's sorrel, while Gigha halibut is served with parsley root and nasturtium tubers. There's equal craft and creativity among desserts, where excellent quality chocolate encases an intense apple filling, with a little kick from Ty Gwyn cider and a soothing hit of cinnamon. The lunch menu is an absolute bargain, while the full-on tasting menu gives the opportunity to go the whole hog. The wine list is sorted by style and includes organic and biodynamic options.
