The Ship at Dunwich

St James Street, DUNWICH, IP17 3DT

1 rosettes

Climbing foliage in the form of a trident adorns this red-brick pub in a coastal village. Surrounded by wild heathland and nature reserves, with a beach on hand and Southwold nearby, it's got the lot, including a garden with an ancient fig tree and a courtyard for outdoor dining. The menu takes in pork, pistachio and cherry terrine with onion marmalade to start, then slow-cooked pork belly with leek gratin, Lyonnaise potatoes, apple and date purée and red wine gravy to follow. At the end, try rich chocolate and beetroot cake with crème fraîche and boozy cherries, or fine East Anglian cheeses and home-made chutney.
