The Restaurant at The Onich Hotel

Set in its own landscaped gardens in a spectacular position overlooking Loch Linnhe, this charming little hotel makes a great base for exploring the nearby glens and lochs. Panoramic views over the Loch to the Glencoe Mountains and Morvern and the Isle of Mull are inspiring, whether you choose to eat traditional bar food by the fire, on the terrace, or in the sun lounge. The Loch View restaurant is a popular spot and a lovely place to tuck into top-quality Scottish produce in flavoursome dishes that reveal good technical expertise in the kitchen. Tea-smoked duck is accompanied by medallions of orange-and-rosemary-scented jelly, with a light apple and honey syrup, while poached smoked haddock fillet keeps things relatively simple with chive mash, seasonal roasted vegetables and a tomato velouté.

Having received good service previously at this hotel, I brought my wife and two guests for a meal. While two meals were satisfactory, the other two, being pan-fried salmon and vegetables, were very poor. The salmon had been cooked some time previously and had a hard surface and was covered with what, to my mind, was salad cream. The duty manager apologised and said he would have words with the kitchen, but that was that - no discount or any complimentary offer. Won't visit again.
