The Square, BLANCHLAND, Consett, DH8 9SP
Built for the residents of Blanchland Abbey in the 1100s, this wonderfully historic inn has served everyone from monks to lead miners. It seems unlikely that the latter, after a long, hard day under ground, would have been much interested in the inn's architecture, not even the vaulted stone crypt, now an atmospheric bar. Upstairs is the Bishop's Dining Room which clearly intends to make a regular customer of you by offering such appealing dishes as potted crab on toast with brown crab mayonnaise, Boccadon Farm veal rump, roasted Loch Duart salmon, and chargrilled flat-iron steak. Finish with Alnwick rum and nut tart, or rhubarb fumble.
