The Kingham Plough

The Green, KINGHAM, Chipping Norton, OX7 6YD

3 rosettes

There are no airs and graces at this old stone pub in a pretty Cotswolds village. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, with sofas and roaring fires in the bar, and a rustic-looking restaurant with bare stone walls, a beamed ceiling and plain wooden tables and chairs. Emily Watkins is an inspired chef, with her own modernised, exciting take on classic British cooking. She's evangelical about sourcing the best local produce and making everything on site, including ketchup and ice cream (also on sale to take away). The bar menu takes in everything from Scotch quail's egg to chicken and ham hock pie with greens, while the restaurant fare is altogether more ambitious. Starters include partridge terrine with a parsnip and apple croquette, parsnip crisps and burnt apple purée, and garlicky parsley soup floated with Hereford snails and wood blewits. The same imaginative and labour-intensive approach goes into main courses, with combinations intelligently considered. Pork belly is partnered by a pheasant sausage, sauced with pork and pheasant consommé and served with caramelised onions and haricot beans. Dover sole is roasted with lemon and rosemary, accompanied by potato dumplings, spinach and brown butter. The finale might be chocolate and orange delice with orange curd ice cream and honeycomb.
