The Crab at Chieveley

Wantage Road, CHIEVELEY, RG20 8UE

2 rosettes

Restaurants with rooms don't come much more singular in intent than the Crab, a thatched cottage in rural Berkshire where the guest rooms are decorated in homage to famous hotels around the world from Fiji to Scotland, while a warren of interlinked rooms make up the seafood restaurant. In case you've missed the theme, the walls are adorned with fishing scenes in bright colours, and the ceilings hung with laden nets. You could be in a little fishing village, were you not land-bound in Berkshire. Main courses do the freshness and vitality of their prime materials proud, by means of dishes such as sea bass with parmesan gnocchi, mushrooms and artichoke cream, turbot and lobster bouillabaisse with rock samphire, and well-timed scallops with a black pudding beignet and sweetcorn risotto, a dish only slightly unbalanced by over-assertive chorizo. Attention to detail is on reassuring show in starters like duck and foie gras terrine wrapped in Parma ham, with raisin purée and a crisp-fried quail egg, and properly wobbly coconut pannacotta with pineapple granité and soft vanilla meringues.
