Built in 1937, at the end of the art deco period, this stylish restaurant was restored to its former glory 10 years ago and is now a smart place to enjoy modern Scottish food. Based on the art deco details of historic liner RMS Queen Mary, original features abound, from the unusual glass frontage to the centrepiece Picasso 'mystery mirror' - a 9ft mirror etched with a naked lady, surrounded by thousands of tiny silver mosaic tiles - thought to be a rare piece by the Spanish artist. The food here is no afterthought though. Local ingredients, with a leaning towards seafood, are used in modern dishes with some interesting flavour combinations. Thus seared local scallops come with a smoked trout risotto, pot-roast Aberdeen Angus beef is served with haggis, neeps, a tattie tower and rich Drambuie sauce, and Guinness flavours a cake served with sherry and raisin ice cream.
