On the main street in the busy market town of Stockbridge you'll find The Greyhound, a homely gastro-pub which is popular with anglers (thanks to its proximity to the River Test) and golfers (likewise the Hampshire Golf Club), as well as those who simply know a good thing when they see it. In the restaurant, oak beams, polished wooden floors and country-style furnishings attest to the building's 15th-century roots, while the lounge with its low ceilings and leather sofas adds a more modern feel. A daily-changing blackboard supplements the seasonally-changing menu of excellent traditional dishes with contemporary touches; soft-boiled egg croquette, for example, with smoked salmon and herb aïoli, followed by pavé of venison with château potatoes, roasted beetroot, goats' cheese and juniper jus. For pud, poached pear might with Amaretto syrup and an almond tuile.
