Hotel La Place
Route du Coin,
La Haule,
ST BRELADE,
Jersey,
JE3 8BT
A traditional 17th-century farmhouse lies at the heart of this much-extended modern hotel complex in lovely countryside just a short stroll from pretty St Aubin's Harbour and St Brelade's Bay. Walking and cycling around the island should set you up nicely for a cocktail in the poolside bar, before settling into the beamed Retreat Restaurant. The straightforward menu focuses on Jersey's fine produce, particularly fish and seafood, which it brings together in combinations that tend towards the classic: pan-fried scallops with risotto and grilled black pudding, or a surf and turf combo of rib-eye steak with half a lobster and Jersey Royals, while pan-roasted pork fillet might be wrapped in smoked bacon and teamed with creamy mash, caramelised onion, and apple and sage sauce.

We were shocked to find that the food was nowhere near the quality of previous visits in 04/06. The next 2 nights we lowered our expectations. Sample brochure menus may have been representative 3 years ago but not now. We were told that the chef changed in Oct 08 and so far it is not clear in which direction the 'cuisine' is going. We will never know, because we feel cheated and on our next visit to Jersey will be going elsewhere, which is a shame, because this hotel had so much to offer.
