The family-run hotel has splendid views of the famous golf course and the coastline, but the restaurant is worth a visit too. The Number Forty restaurant is a light and bright space with muted tones of cream and brown and well-spaced, formally dressed tables. It cuts a contemporary dash. The menu deals in fashionable ideas (cappuccino of white bean) and more traditional fare such as steaks from the grill, and presentation is a strength. Butternut squash soup demonstrates a steady hand in the kitchen when it comes to the balance of flavours, as does main-course halibut served with crab risotto and a pea purée.
