Lion & Pheasant Hotel

49-50 Wyle Cop, SHREWSBURY, SY1 1XJ

2 rosettes

This coaching inn has stood since the 16th century just before the street called Wyle Cop becomes a bridge over the River Severn. Its period facade gives way to a contemporary New England-style interior, with neutral tones and tongue-and-groove-panelling combining harmoniously with the old brickwork and beams. There's a rather cool bar with a real fire, and a smart but relaxed restaurant that focuses on modern British meals such as pea and watercress soup with pig's head croquette, followed by pan-fried lemon sole, creamed potatoes, summer greens and clams in white wine sauce. End on apple pannacotta, nougat, apple and Calvados sorbet with raspberry butter.
