At the heart of operations at the ancient White Horse is a brasserie-styled dining room, with a British-based roll call of dishes inflected with some European technique. Well-defined flavours shine forth from quality prime materials, and presentations are clean and appealing. A piece of finely timed salmon is partnered with seared foie gras and cumined lentils for an effective opener, while mains run to wild mushroom and leek lasagne with a fried duck egg, herb-crusted cod in butternut velouté, and chargrilled loin and braised neck of local lamb with a purée of haricots in balsamic jus. Go Spanish for dessert with soft-centred churros and toasted almonds, accompanied by raspberry sorbet.
