Restaurant Nathan Outlaw

6 New Road, PORT ISAAC, PL29 3SB

4 rosettes

Up on New Road with stunning views over the sea, Nathan Outlaw has found a home for his flagship restaurant that is both contemporary and, like the man himself, confidently understated. With a host of TV appearances under his belt, a number of fish-themed books, not to mention restaurants in London, Rock and a second place in Port Isaac, Nathan is the go-to-guy to deal with the fruits of the sea. There's no way better way to get an idea of what Mr Outlaw is all about than to settle down in the simply soothing dining room with that sea view and Cornish artworks on the walls, and work your way through the Seafood Tasting Menu. The seafood is always the star of the show, but the acute technical skills of the kitchen team, some creative thinking, and informed, charming service create a memorable experience. Flavours are judged just right in an opening course of cured monkfish with ginger, fennel and lemon, followed by a daringly clever pairing of raw scallop and preserved herring with a hit of chilli and bacon. The journey through local waters continues with the arrival of lemon sole with wild garlic and a crispy oyster, gurnard in a crabby Porthilly sauce, and a fabulous piece of turbot partnered with spring vegetables and green dressing. Next up, a cheese course might be Cornish Jack with celery and walnuts, before the arrival of two sweet courses, the first of which could be a beautiful and clever affair with orange and rhubarb.
