Adams Lane, Down Thomas, PLYMOUTH, PL9 0DY
A 16th-century manor house in the beautiful South Hams, Langdon Court has played host to royal personages and their consorts since the days of Henry VIII and Catherine Parr. A country-house hotel since 1960, local farms and Devon fishermen supply the kitchen, where the cooking continues on an impressive upward trajectory. Bream fillet with cockle, clam and chicken broth is one of the stand-out starters and might be followed by beef fillet, Jacob's Ladder, celeriac risotto, shallots and veal jus. A light and delicate tonka bean soufflé, coconut custard and pineapple sorbet is a hugely successful dessert.
