It's just a short journey uphill for the fish supplies landed in the harbour to make it to the tables of the bistro outpost of the Rick Stein empire. St Petroc's is a more informal and wallet-friendly route to sample the trademark Stein way with spanking fresh fish and seafood than the flagship venue down the road. It is a jaunty, uncluttered space with vivid modern paintings on white walls, bare wooden tables, and a courtyard and garden for alfresco dining. Fish still rules the roost on a menu that looks to France and the Mediterranean for its inspiration, as witnessed in a starter of grilled scallops served on the half shell with pumpkin seeds, Serrano ham, and chilli and coriander sauce. Next up, a fine fillet of haddock comes in the robust company of beer, bacon and Savoy cabbage, while pecan and chocolate tart with vanilla ice cream provides a simple but effective finish.
