45 Willow Street, OSWESTRY, SY11 1AQ
In a 16th-century inn, full of cossetting beamed character, but not stuck in the past, monthly-changing set-price dinner menus take you through three courses of well-crafted, Gallic-influenced ideas, with an appetiser to set the ball rolling, and a sorbet before mains, or for tighter budgets there's a great value mid-week market menu. Start with well-made game terrine served with brioche and Cumberland sauce, followed by roasted leg and loin of lamb matched with wild mushroom pearl barley risotto and roast garlic purée, or a rich bouillabaisse of fish, shellfish and potatoes poached in saffron and fennel. Desserts might revert to British comfort mode with steamed marmalade pudding with Drambuie custard.
