A former coaching inn with lots of period charm and character, the Rutland Arms is in the centre of the town and built around a cobbled courtyard dating back to the reign of Charles II. Race days are a boon for Carriages of course, but the street-facing restaurant complete with unclothed tables and exposed brickwork has much to offer all year round. Expect unfussy, classic brasserie-style dishes based on European and British preparations and unpretentiously presented. Thus roasted Mediterranean vegetable tart comes with hollandaise sauce, while main-course oven-roasted chicken breast is partnered with creamy mash, baby leeks, harissa sauce and a tomato concasse.
