Brunel's Restaurant at The Anchor Bar

9 Bryansford Road, NEWCASTLE, Co Down, BT33 0HJ

1 rosettes

Brunel's is a first-floor venue above the ever-popular Anchor Bar, just off the Newcastle seafront. Craft beers and a decent wine list are among the attractions, the star turn being the modern Irish brasserie food, with seafood a trump card. Start with butter-poached langoustines and roast carrots, garnished with buttermilk froth and gingerbread crumb, and follow perhaps with roast coley and chorizo risotto, with capers and pine nuts in a sherry dressing. Rump of Mourne mountain lamb is a fine cut that doesn't need the distraction of hazelnut purée, but gains from its accompaniments of sea beets and samphire. Chocolate fondant comes with the sharpening touch of black cherry sorbet.
