The Royal Oak Paley Street

Paley Street, Littlefield Green, MAIDENHEAD, SL6 3JN

3 rosettes

The Parkinson family's whitewashed 17th-century country pub might look a little unassuming, but the food brings in foodies from far and wide, and the place hasn't lost sight of the village hostelry's primary duty, which is pumping a good pint of cask-conditioned ale to order. Outside, the attractive gardens run to an ornamental waterfall, while the interiors have been appealingly designed to retain the character of an oak-beamed main bar with a real fire. A more modern tone prevails in the dining area, where flagstone and wood floors, high-backed leather chairs, unclothed tables and striking contemporary artworks brighten a scene that is classy but not over-dressed, and retains a relaxed feel. Here, friendly, efficient staff deliver on-trend plates of finely worked, high-impact modern cooking, opening with a sheer raviolo filled with smoked herring on an Indian-spiced leek bed, topped with luscious chilli jam, or there might be roast quail supported by braised chicory and a hazelnut and pear salad. Next up, the rich spring flavours of rump and shoulder of South Downs lamb are offset with capers, kale and carrots, or a Spanish mélange of stone bass, chorizo, mussels and samphire in Paimpol bean stew might catch the eye. For dessert, there could be skilfully reworked rhubarb and custard with orange shortbread and rhubarb sorbet, or apricot and pistachio tart with milk ice cream, or go for a savoury finish with well-kept British and Irish cheeses. If you're not up for a full meal, snacks such as Scotch egg, spiced aubergine and houmous, or mini fishcakes with tartare deliver the same punchy flavours and excellent ingredients. The icing on the cake is a cracking list of over 500 wines with a good choice by the glass.
