MacCallums of Troon

The Harbour, TROON, KA10 6DH

1 rosettes

Watching the waves crash against Troon's harbour wall as the fishing fleet lands its catch, thoughts turn inescapably to the prospect of dining on fish and seafood. And this harbourside restaurant in an attractively converted pump house is guaranteed to come up with the goods. Inside it is a businesslike space of high rafters, exposed brick walls liberally layered with maritime memorabilia, and bare, rustic wooden tables set in a simple manner that echoes the unfussy treatments meted out to the spanking-fresh seafood (whose journey from boat to table can be measured in feet). What has just come in on the quayside gets star billing on the chalkboard. The Cullen skink delivers a creamy, smoky opener filled with chunks of haddock, potatoes and leek, while a splendid fillet of halibut is showcased in a main course beside a supporting cast of baked ratatouille, saffron potatoes and fish fumet. Dessert is no mere sideshow either, as seen in a light bitter chocolate mousse with orange and white chocolate ice cream.
