Compasses Inn

1 rosettes

This thatched 14th-century inn is a charming place, with its low beams, standing timbers and menus more cosmopolitan than the surroundings would suggest. A highly professional brigade at the stoves delivers starters ranging from grilled pickled mackerel with radish and fennel salad and dill dressing to a canonical version of foie gras and chicken liver terrine with apricot and ginger chutney. There are 'traditionals', such as beer-battered hake with chips and tartare sauce, but there is adventure elsewhere, for example in duck breast in a Szechuan pepper glaze with basmati rice. Imaginative desserts stretch to ricotta and orange tart with cherry sorbet, and chocolate torte with mango ice cream.
