39 Buckingham Palace Road, LONDON, SW1W 0PS
Occupying a prime spot opposite Buckingham Palace Mews, The Rubens has been a hotel since 1912, when it became the obvious choice for those attending functions at the Palace. The menu opens with a powerfully flavoured Arbroath smokie fishcake with a poached egg in chive butter, alongside the prawn and crayfish cocktails, Caesar salad, and smoked salmon. Buccleuch steaks form the centrepiece, perhaps Chateaubriand or a hefty rib-eye on the bone, matched with truffled macaroni cheese and creamed spinach in peppercorned Cognac sauce. By contrast, fried hake with salsify and sea beets is straight from the modern repertoire. Finish with banana profiteroles and chocolate sauce.
