20 Queen Street, Mayfair, LONDON, W1J 5PR

2 rosettes

Tamarind was in the vanguard of design-led new-wave Indians when it opened in 1995. The expansive basement still works a glamorous contemporary chic with linen-clad tables tended by formally dressed, charming staff. The cooking takes its cue from the rich Mogul dishes of the Indian northwest, which makes ample use of the tandoor, but the kitchen likes to experiment with modern European ideas too. Start with grilled scallops topped with roasted peppers, move on to Awadhi murgh - chicken with melon seeds and yogurt - or lamb biryani, and make sure you give due attention to the kebab section. A six-course tasting menu features signature dishes from Tamarind's repertoire.
