Jos? Pizarro bangs the drum for authentic Spanish cocina in his TV appearances and cookbooks so head for his buzzy self-titled restaurant in newly-trendy Bermondsey to try his take on modern Spanish cuisine. It's a roomy, open-plan space that combines traditional Iberian touches - whole hams hanging at a Spanish tile-frieze bar, warm textures of wood - with a stripped back aesthetic that appeals to local hipsters. Choose between booth seats, a long communal table, a long marble counter looking out of the window, or perch on a ringside seat by the open kitchen. Don't expect the fiddly, molecular cooking that has made several Spanish chefs world famous: the kitchen deals in top-notch ingredients put together in simple, unfussy combinations. Tender grilled octopus matched with creamy, paprika-infused potato and egg caviar gets the taste buds revved up for a punchy main course of venison stew with chestnuts and earthy black trompette mushrooms, or there might be roast Segovian suckling pig with cranberry sauce. Finish with a riff on chocolate - mousse, bu?uelo, ice cream and truffle.
