194 Bermondsey Street, LONDON, SE1 3TQ

2 rosettes

If you've fallen in love with the tapas served at José at 104 Bermondsey Street, then you might want to hotfoot it down to number 194 where the eponymous José Pizarro has opened a stylish and casual restaurant serving a full menu of authentic and modern Spanish cuisine. Floor-to-ceiling windows fill the room with natural light, while the open kitchen adds to the buzz and you can take your pick of places to sit (on a stool at the bar, beside the window for some people watching, or a more intimate booth at the back). The regularly-changing menu is bolstered by daily specials, and the kitchen deals in top-notch ingredients put together in simple, unfussy combinations. Lamb's sweetbreads with PX sherry is one way to begin, the sweetbreads moist and rich and served with an intense but well balanced sauce, while Iberico pork presa with Jerusalem artichokes and pear purée makes a fine main course (precisely cooked meat complemented perfectly by sweet pear and earthy artichokes). Round things off with a textbook vanilla cheesecake with fresh raspberries.
