34 Rupert Street, LONDON, W1D 6DN

2 rosettes

In the throbbing heart of theatreland, this bijou restaurant has picked up glowing reviews from food critics sine opening. The cooking looks to the Levant, North Africa and southern Spain for inspiration and the sunny flavours have broad appeal. A quirkily named and beautifully presented 'Octo-houmous' sees octopus cooked over charcoal served with chickpea masabacha and cherry tomato confit. Main courses deliver the likes of corn-fed chicken cooked in buttermilk with Jerusalem spices and teamed with rainbow chard and freekeh (roasted wheat grain). Desserts are equally diverting - perhaps a rose-scented malabi (a Middle Eastern classic) with raspberry coulis and coconut meringue pistachio crunch.
