Medlar Restaurant

438 King's Road, Chelsea, LONDON, SW10 0LJ

3 rosettes

It can be a fine line between success and failure in the restaurant game, but some people manage to make success look very easy indeed, and these include Joe Mercer Nairne and David O'Connor. Medlar is one of those restaurants that goes about its business with a quiet confidence: the menu reads (and eats) like a foodie's dream, the service is slick but not overbearing, and the prices are reasonable, particularly considering the trendy King's Road location looks good from the street with cool, muted colour tones, awning, and doors that open up to give that European vibe in the warmer months (there are actually a few tables outside as well). Inside it is simply elegant, not casual, but not over-conceptualised either - sage-green banquettes, mirrored walls and tables dressed in white linen, the designer touches are present but not in your face. It is restrained and confident - a bit like the cooking. The food has a rustic charm about it, but it is far from unsophisticated: the only fly in the ointment is having to choose what to eat when you want to eat it all. What food lover could pass up the chance to kick off with duck egg tart with red wine sauce, turnip purée, lardons and sautéed duck heart, or slow-cooked cuttlefish with Morteau sausage, saffron, sherry, soft white polenta and gremolata? And that's just the starters. Next up, duck breast and confit leg with Puy lentils, beetroot, mustard fruits and paysanne salad competes for your attention with roast cod with boulangère potatoes, Jerusalem artichoke purée, Swiss chard and salmoriglio sauce. For dessert, lemon curd beignet with lemon sorbet and Chantilly cream and chocolate tart with salted caramel and praline parfait maintain the high standards to the very end.
