Le Vacherin

76-77 South Parade, LONDON, W4 5LF

2 rosettes

This neighbourhood bistro certainly conjures the mood and looks of cross-Channel dining with its polished wood floors, brown leather banquettes at linen-swathed tables and mirror-friezes on cream walls hung with French-themed posters. Gastro anoraks might know that Le Vacherin is named after a French Alpine cheese and a light-as-air dessert consisting of a meringue crust filled with Chantilly cream and fruit, so the classic French cooking comes as no surprise. The kitchen excels at doing simple things well; you might find beignets of frog's legs with sauce gribiche alongside grilled red mullet paired with peas, broad beans and saffron aļoli, while a main-course roast rump of Hereford beef is partnered by bone marrow, watercress, pommes allumettes and bordelaise sauce. If you are after a real hit of rustic authenticity, how about an assiette of duck, comprising magret, leg, gizzards and foie gras with Puy lentils? For dessert, pear and almond tart with raspberry ripple ice cream should send you home with a smile. The prix-fixe menu is particularly good value in any language.
