Le Café du Marché

Charterhouse Mews, Charterhouse Square, LONDON, EC1M 6AH

1 rosettes

This place drips classic cross-Channel country auberge style with its bare-brick walls, French posters, jazz pianist and candlelit tables set in a rustic-chic converted Victorian warehouse. The scene thus set, you can expect unreconstructed French provincial dishes on an uncomplicated two- or three-course fixed price menu - honest, peasant cooking built on fresh, well-sourced materials. Start with classic fish soup with croûtons, rouille and grated gruyère, and progress to pan-fried venison with cauliflower purée, apricot chutney and port sauce, or two might share a grilled leg of Pyrenean milk-fed lamb with flageolet beans and Madeira sauce. Finish with a chocolate and caramel bavarois, or the splendid selection of French cheeses.
