Hendon Hall Hotel

Ashley Lane, Hendon, LONDON, NW4 1HF

2 rosettes

The impressive North London mansion dates from the 16th century and has earned a crust as a hotel since 1911. Nowadays, the place has a light contemporary look that blends well with a host of period features, including crystal chandeliers, a grand staircase and handsomely-proportioned rooms. Named after the 18th-century actor and manager of the eponymous Drury Lane theatre, who once owned the hall, the fine-dining Garrick Restaurant works an upmarket modern look with contemporary art on the walls and smart russet and gold high-backed chairs at formally-laid tables. The kitchen continues to score palpable hits with its up-to-date cooking, setting out with a well-made terrine of confit duck, guinea fowl and foie gras matched creatively with red wine pear purée and parsnip. Next up, roast fillet of hake comes with capers and leek fondue, and jus noisette. The modern, creative thinking continues at dessert stage too with a well-thought-out composition of flavours and textures involving whipped lemon curd, meringue, citrus jelly and lemonade granita.
