Description
The River Irfon runs through the town - Llanwrtyd Wells is the smallest town in Britain, by all accounts - and Alan and Mary Ann Gilchrist's restaurant is set beside the bridge in the centre of town. The stone-built building isn't difficult to spot with its light blue paintwork and you can expect a warm welcome on arrival. The restaurant is attractively decorated in soothing tones of cream, beige and brown, and looks contemporary without resorting to overt style statements; comfort is provided by high-backed leather chairs and linen napery, and the diligent and attentive service of Alan Gilchrist. Wife Mary Ann looks after the cooking, her confident, one-woman act undertaken with panache, underlining her obvious passion and talent. Her à la carte menu (there's also fixed-price Menu Surprise) makes a virtue of simplicity, the wonderful straightforward approach driven by stunningly fresh, local seasonal produce. Tagliolini with a spicy tomato and olive sauce is a simple and enjoyable first course, perhaps followed by Carmarthenshire beef fillet with potato rösti, garlic spinach and a red wine jus. There's a bar-bistro in the basement.

Alan and Mary Ann are wonderful hosts. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated, light and airy. The food was cooked perfectly and we were well looked after by Alan who has a lovely wine list. Highly recommend!

This place has let a reputation go to its head - its about ten years behind the time now and the lady chef is awfully rude - unwarm.
