Carlton Riverside
Irfon Crescent,
LLANWRTYD WELLS,
LD5 4SP
Alan and Mary Ann Gilchrist's restaurant with rooms isn't hard to track down: the grand house with sky blue paintwork by the bridge over the River Irfon stands out from the grey stone buildings of Llanwrtyd Wells like a budgie among a flock of pigeons. After a warm welcome, you can unwind over an aperitif in the basement bar-bistro, then settle into a high-backed chocolate leather chair amid the understated contemporary style of the restaurant. Alan takes care of front-of-house duties with unobtrusive diligence, while Mary Ann delivers the goods at the stoves, sourcing superb materials and using her imagination and obvious culinary skills to bring them together in well-thought-out combinations. Scallop and crab lasagne with orange butter sauce is a typical opener, while mains run to roast fillet of beef with oxtail and mushroom Pithiviers, cottage pie, shallots in red wine and porcini foam. End with a homely brioche bread-and-butter pudding with crème anglaise.

Alan and Mary Ann are wonderful hosts. The room we stayed in was beautifully decorated, light and airy. The food was cooked perfectly and we were well looked after by Alan who has a lovely wine list. Highly recommend!

This place has let a reputation go to its head - its about ten years behind the time now and the lady chef is awfully rude - unwarm.
