Picture windows give views over the River Irfon from the dining room of this restaurant with rooms, making visits during daylight hours rather special, while, as night falls, the lights are dimmed and the mood becomes a little more intimate. It's not a large room, seating only 20 or so, with a contemporary, country-style finish. Service is relaxed and personable. The kitchen is the domain of the long-running chef-patron, and she ensures the best stuff comes her way, much of it from around this neck of the woods. There's a light touch to a first-course cod loin, topped with a Parmesan and lemon crust, and served with a butter sauce, or go for the earthiness of wild mushrooms on grilled brioche. Next up, fillet of sea bass is partnered with squid ink noodles, courgette ribbons and a cracking lobster sauce, and rump of Welsh lamb is roasted and arrives with creamed leeks and Madeira jus. The technical proficiency of the kitchen is confirmed by a banana soufflé into which white chocolate sauce is poured.
