Ensconced in 88 acres of mature woodland with its own lake, Branston Hall is a grand Victorian country house built to impress. Chandeliers, oil paintings, and Italian-style chairs at linen-swathed tables combine with period features in the elegant Lakeside Restaurant, where top-quality fish and meat, often locally sourced, are handled with imagination and obvious technical ability in dishes that take their inspiration from around the world. Orkney scallops might arrive with caramelised pig's trotter, roasted cauliflower and Sri Lankan coconut curry, while mains could include rump of lamb baked with Moroccan herbs, merguez sausage, saffron potato and lemon-scented chick peas, or roast monkfish and braised oxtail with potato purée, flageolet beans, clam and persillade sauce. Finish with a rum-scented crème brûlée with pineapple crisps and Jamaican allspice.
