Green Lane, Ellel, LANCASTER, LA1 4GJ
A little west of the M6, practically on the doorstep of the Lake District, Lancaster House is an events and leisure hotel on the university campus. Foodworks is the promising name of its restaurant, and a relaxed, hang-loose brasserie feel predominates, with unclothed tables, ornate light fittings and mural graphics of flat-capped folk going about their Lancashire business. It offers a seasonal menu of readily understandable brasserie fare such as duck liver pâté with spiced plum and apple chutney and toasted brioche, followed by the likes of sea bass and samphire in a dressing of lemon oil and balsamic. Finish with crème brûlée and shortbread.
