Gordon's

Main Street, INVERKEILOR, DD11 5RN

3 rosettes

If it was once the fate of Inverkeilor to be overlooked by travellers hurtling towards nearby Arbroath, but, over a 30-year period, Gordon and Maria Watson brought it firmly into the Scottish spotlight. Sadly, Gordon passed away in June 2016, but the restaurant remains a fitting testament to his exemplary culinary standards. Set beside peaceful Lunan Bay, this coastal village is home to this warmly relaxing restaurant with rooms, some of the warmth provided by a traditional log burner, the rest by a thoroughly welcoming front-of-house approach. Gordon's son, Garry Watson, oversees the kitchen for a mixture of simple regional and more high-toned classical cooking, and the drill is a fixed-price menu of four courses at dinner, with a silky velouté soup such as carrot and orange with smoked eel often cropping up at second stage. Prior to that, there could be a well-executed twice-baked soufflé of Mull Tobermory cheddar, or a trend-conscious pairing of scallops and crispy chicken wings with Jerusalem artichoke and hazelnuts. For mains, quality Scottish meat and fish is showcased, perhaps in best-end cutlets and confit shoulder of Forfar lamb with minted pea ravioli and butternut squash in tomato jus, or fennel seed-crusted monkfish with spiced couscous. At the close, divine Angus raspberries (whole and in sorbet) almost upstage a wildly rich Valrhona parfait garnished with cocoa nib tuile.
