The Brownlow Arms

High Road, HOUGH-ON-THE-HILL, Grantham, NG32 2AZ

1 rosettes

This Lincolnshire village inn has come up in the world, being as elegantly appointed as an interiors magazine country house, with tapestry-backed chairs and gilt-framed mirrors in a panelled dining room. Attentive, friendly service puts everyone at their ease, and the menu stays within the familiar territory of classic country-pub cooking. Braised ox tongue with celeriac remoulade, pickled shallots and piccalilli purée makes a robust opener, followed, perhaps, by a trio of lamb comprising pan-roasted cannon, seared liver and a shepherd's pie, served with carrots, spinach and rosemary jus. For dessert, there may be triple chocolate brownie with chocolate sauce and rocky road ice cream.
