Built as a chantry house at the tail-end of the Plantagenet era, The White Hart offers traditionally-based British food with contemporary flourishes. Pink-cooked pigeon turns up with caramelised onions and toasted pine kernels on puff pastry for an impressive beginner, while mains run to well-timed fish such as salmon, served with fish fingers or a copper pan of fish pie, and meats such as pheasant with boxty potato cake and winter veg. Steaks are top-drawer: 28-day aged rib-eyes in béarnaise with proper chips. Sharing boards of fish, meze or antipasti are another option. Dessert could be a study in cherry, with purée, tuile, sorbet and Kirsch-soaked fruit accompanying pistachio cake.
