Moorings Hotel

Considering its tranquil location, there's plenty going on around the Moorings Hotel. You could hike in the steps of World War II commandos who trained in the Great Glen, watch boats climbing the heroic flight of locks known as Neptune's Staircase on the Caledonian Canal as it leaves Loch Linnhe, or turn up to wave at the Jacobite train as it steams past on its way to the fishing port of Mallaig. The hotel is a welcoming, traditional place with a beamed restaurant serving the pick of local seafood and game in a menu of uncomplicated modern Scottish dishes. Start, perhaps, with a trio of Highland salmon - gravad lax with mustard cream, hot-smoked, and salmon tartare with dill mayonnaise - followed by roast rump of lamb with buttered cabbage, fondant potato and garlic and rosemary jus. Finish with malt whisky cranachan with raspberries and home-made shortbread.
