Queens Court Hotel, 6-8 Bystock Terrance, EXETER, EX4 4HY
The walls of this rather romantic hotel restaurant are decorated with Venetian masks, but don't expect an Italian menu - a pasta or risotto will no doubt be up for grabs (perhaps squid ink spaghetti with pan-fried squid, grey mullet and Nantua sauce), but otherwise the kitchen deals in modern British food, built on a bedrock of Devon's fine produce. Hand-dived Brixham scallops arrive in a tried-and-tested partnership with black pudding, while honey-glazed duck breast is pan-fried and served with couscous, celeriac purée and rosemary jus. Chiming with the season, dessert brings vanilla pannacotta with summer berries and raspberry sorbet.
