One Pico Restaurant

Molesworth Place, off St. Stephen's Green, DUBLIN 2, ROI,

The Rosette award for this establishment is unconfirmed. Down a narrow lane, a revamped 18th-century coach house is the setting for some of the most diverting contemporary cooking in Dublin. In a soothingly refined dining room with a mellow colour scheme, velour seats, modern art and closely-packed tables dressed up to the nines, Ciaran McGill and his team turn out classically inspired dishes with an up-to-date edge. Lincolnshire eel keeps fashionable company with crispy chicken skin and charred leeks in a first course, while another might see confit quail packed into ravioli and served with Alsace bacon and potato consommé. Among main courses, tender rump of lamb is matched with a croquette of slow-cooked belly and a burnt aubergine purée, and a fishy option might be John Dory with Wye Valley asparagus, morels and a flavourful bisque. There's further evidence of appreciation of French classical ways in a dessert of Poire Williams soufflé, served with milk and honey ice cream, with a more exotic option being passionfruit posset with pineapple sorbet and frozen yogurt. A slate of Irish and French cheeses arrives with spiced pear chutney and crackers. There's also a two-course pre-theatre menu available for anyone heading for a show or looking to save a few Euros.
