In a cottage in the middle of a field near Dalry, this small, unpretentious restaurant has two rooms split by a central fireplace, and an informal, relaxed atmosphere. Open with beetroot-cured gravad lax on beetroot and clementine salad with a potato cake. Main courses impress with their timing and presentation, such as melt-in-the-mouth roast local lamb on wilted spinach, with a mound of cauliflower purée topped with confit neck fillet and a square of dauphinoise, all complemented by rosemary jus. The canapés are great, and puddings impress too, among them Valrhona truffle cake with prune and Armagnac ice cream.
